The fact is that spiritual Judaism is simply not accessible enough in Israel, and many of my generation are completely turned off Judaism due to the role of Haredis in Israeli society. This is not to say that there aren’t many wonderful and progressive Jewish outreach initatives here in Israel, but facts are facts and Israelis DO go to India. Why do I bring this up? Sometimes cross-cultural fertilization can lead to very rewarding collaborations and mutual-understanding. Such is the case with Israeli Musician Shye Ben-Tzur and his new band Heeyam (The State of Supreme Love).

They perform Sufi Muslim spiritual Qawalli music IN HEBREW and the results are simply sublime. Check it out. I know there is a lot of very justified Islam bashing that goes on around here, but these guys are really great. If only they could all be Sufis – they’d be too busy dancing ecstatically and making great music to teach their kids to blow themselves up.

If any of you are interested in getting to know about real life in Modern Israel I highly reccommend getting this album. I was lucky enough to see these guys in concert a few times last year – the best being at the Shantipi Festival on Achziv Beach just a few miles from the Lebanese border. Listening to these amazing musicians – Jewish and Muslim playing together and looking up at the army bases on the strategic ridge that demarcates the Israeli/Lebanese border – and from where I have looked down on this same beach, it made me wonder just how long it will take till my neighbours on the other side of that hill will join us to dance together on the beach.

This fantasy seems so far away right now and we must keep fighting to defeat those who aim to destroy us, but at the end of the day we must remember that we will be neighbours living side by side. Our actions right now must reflect this goal as much as they can (no easy task – and always remember that the IDF is the absolute leader in taking this into consideration) even in spite of the fact that our enemies’ actions do not. I realized myself as I was thinking about this, that the VERY FACT THAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS, shows one of the best qualities of Israeli society – that in spite of all we put up with and all we go through, we are still a people striving for peace and coexistence and will be only too happy when the day comes when we can finally beat our swords into ploughshares once and for all. Until that time comes however, we will continue to protect ourselves and the Jewish people everywhere while never ceasing to go out and sit at cafes, have fun, party on the beach, live in the moment and yes, DANCE at the feet of the Lord. Nothing frustrates terrorists – enemies of humanity – more than this and this, the ultimate antidote to terrorism, is why Israel and the Jewish people will never be destroyed.
